front page annalysis of music magazine (Terrorizer)

i just lost the whole of this essay so i shall have to start again.

Terrorizer is a death metal and heavy metal magazine and is quite a low market magazine. i found faults on the front cover at the bottom which i believe to be a crop fault or a fault in general as it is a white line at the bottom of the page which looks like it shouldn't be there. there is also a yellow coloured image of a zombie type creature in the top right hand corner of the front cover which doesn't fit because it is a different colour to anything else depicted on the front cover. there also isn't a specific staple 3 coloured system to the front cover. there is purple (mysterious colour) , white, green ( to compliment the band icon on the front) and red ( to signify blood) on the front cover and overall it looks very cluttered. the cluttered effect isn't just contributed from the colours but also the layout of magazine front cover. the red blood stains on the front cover are stereotypical to the heavy metal genre connoting anger and violence.
there are two list of bands featured in the magazine instead of the featured articles which are seen on kerrang. there are also quite a few cover stories added to the front cover, it feels like they have tried to fit too much in.
even though the magazine looks quite low end it has quite a expensive price tag, this is to be expected with a free cd every month and the thickness of the paper used on the front cover.
the fonts used on the front cover are stereotypical of the rock genre because they are distressed and rebellious. i do think they too many different styles and colours of font are used which confuses the eye. the font of the band 'Municipal Waste' is the actually band icon and recognised image in other magazine they would have just written the band name. i quite like the fact they did this as it would make fans of this particular band notice it more.
i think the headline of the magazine should be bigger as it stuck on to the side. i think they are relying on its colour to stand out (lime green) big headlines are averagely the largest and most noticeable part of a front cover (bar the main image).
the main image of the magazine is of the featured band looking quite angry, again following the connotations of heavy metal music of rebellion, anger, drinking, tattoos and piercings. the mode of address of this picture most certainly isn't friendly. it depicts the lifestyle of heavy metal music and maybe you would like to aspire to be them or be afraid or them. the main image also doesnt take up the whole of the front page it has been cut out and place on the right side of the magazine maybe the magazine would look simplier if there was a background adjoinded to the main image.
i also dont think that the masthead stands out very much against everything. overall it hink it needs to be simplified.
the strapline at the top stands out quite alot against a red distressed background. the capitised words 'free cd' really grabs the attention. i think i shall use capital letters quite alot on my front cover to no only stand out but create a shouting type register and tone to make the front cover quite angry to conform to the rock genre.

Music magazine survey

i have made a survey on survey monkey which is audience research to understand what my audience want.
i currently have 3 responces but it has only been active for 30mins.
i will also do a paper questioanire

front page annalysis of rock magazines (Rocksound)

there isn't alot of stories on the front cover instead there are just 2 lists of the bands featured inside the mag zine. there are 3 stories (puffs and teasers) inside the strap line which is an unconventional place to position them. i think they should be positioned in a more noticeable, conventional place and they shouldn't be as small as they are. inside the strap line also lies the image previews of the posters inside the magazine.
the headline states 'we predict a riot' which employs intertextuality are from a well known song from the Kaiser Chiefs. the headline is visible and visually effective in displaying the stereotypically destructive rock lifestyle but the headline has no relevance and has no puff to explain the significance. the photo spanning the front cover is the only hint that it involves the headline. this could be a clever ploy to make the purchaser read the magazine or lack of judgement to not explain the headline.
the cost of this magazine can be seen by the front cover because of the glossy thick card that the front cover is printed on is of a much higher caliber than Kerrang, which would explain the price difference. Kerrang (weekly) being £2.20 and Rocksound (monthly) being £3.80 and my third magazine of Terrorizer (monthly) magazine being £3.80.
the font on the front is noticeable and a nice noticeable colour and graphic. the three main colours of the magazine are purple black and white. black and white are quite basic yet complimentary colours and purple is quite a mysterious which could explain the headline on the front as it is unexplained.
the yellow used on the front cover is to highlight specific words or phrases as yellow connotes danger (which would also link with the riot side of the headline) and makes things eye catching which it creates very well on this front cover.
the large rip on the front of the magazine is the reminisce of a supplementary CD attached to the front cover which came free with the magazine. i think this is something i may think about doing with my magazine because 'freebies' help sell magazines.
the mode of address of the image is angry which with support the connotations of a rock music magazine. the angry facial expressions and the threatening implements they are holding anchor the riot theme of the front cover.

Rocksound covers the more 'underground' scene of music unlike the more commercialised music covered by the likes of Kerrang. Rocksound is a British magazine and label themselves as a leading alternative magazine in the UK. The first edition was published in March 1999. Every issue comes with a Cd which my explian the more expensive price, this would also make it more desirable to buy. the auidence is seen as 15-24 with 58% of the readers being female and 42% being male. 57% of the audience are 15-17 years old and 31% being 18-25 with the other percentage being made up by the 26+ age range.

front page annalysis of rock magazines (kerrang)

i think the front page is quite busy because the teasers, puffs and adjoining photographs are making it a bit cluttered. i think the front photograph is the main thing that you can see so i think more of the photograph should be shown to make more of an initial impact. i also think because of this it isn't obviously a music magazine but because it is the best weekly sold music magazine in circulation it may rely on this fact for sale and not on its appearance as such.
i think the over all presentation of the magazine looks as in-expensive as the price of the magazine. the price of the magazine is alot cheaper then any rival rock magazine which make kerrang an easy option for people with lose change. stereotypically, students and teenagers (who are kerrangs main market) are low of cash and this may be the reason why they opt for this magazine. i think the magazine looks cheap from the front cover because of the use of slang language and buzzwords which are stereotypically used in celebrity culture magazines. words like 'MEGA COMP' not only show the demographic of the magazine of a teenage audience but also lowers the articulate capability of the magazine.
the thickness of the paper used on the front cover is thin and flimsy unlike the two other magazines i have analysed. i think this is because of the mass production of the magazine and the expense that it would incur.
the masthead is distressed and looks like shattered glass which follows the stereotype of the rebellious and destructive traits of rock music. this is also shown through the ripped side box containing the images of the posters inside the magazine.
the three colours of the magazine front cover are very specific and noticeable and they compliment each other although they are stereotypical rock related, teenager rebellion colours unlike the other magazines i have analysed.
there also isn't a list of bands who are inside the magazine. instead it is a more structured front cover consisting of stories and images.
the company who publishes Kerrang is Bauer consumer media. they were formerly published by Emap until they sold a third of their company to Bauer. the first copy was published on the 6Th of June 1981. i have found circulation and subscription figures but they do not state the time scale of research so therefore i find them unreliable. Kerrang is also published in Spain and Australia. The Kerrang brand is massive and is an umbrella which accommodates a television channel, an awards evening, radio station and website. this is an example of masthead branding. this may be the reason for why Kerrang took over the number one rock music magazine position from NME.
Kerrangs target market is seen as ranging from 16-25 year old and specific towards people with a genre-specific interest of rock music. Recently, this has been tested because of the 'pop-like' bands being featured in kerrang which is why the reader age has now been revised down to 14-17 year old.

start of music magazine reasearch

today i started the research for the production of my music magazine. i have 3 rock magazines to deconstruct. i have chosen rock because it is the genre of music i love and have a passion for. i have chosen to deconstruct Kerrang! magazine which is a magazine which covers Pop-Rock to Electro and Heavy Metal, Rocksound magazine which covers exactly what it's namesake suggests and final Terrorizer magazine which is a death metal and heavy metal magazine.
i also had choice of deconstructing Big Cheese magazine and Metal Hammer magazine but i chose the magazine which more diverse genres inside them still associated with the genre rock.
