Vogue Write up

Annotation of the front cover of Vogue Magazine Lisa Phillips

Masthead

The masthead is a pastel pink which takes up 1/4 of the whole page. The masthead anchor the whole text. The font size of the masthead is large enough to see from a distance on the shelf and will stand out against other magazines. There is no slogan adjoined to the masthead because Vogue is a large worldwide company and is recognizable enough with just the masthead.

Colours

The main three colours of the magazine front cover is pastel pink, white and black. Pink connotes femininity and because it’s a pastel pink it’s a unobtrusive soft femininity. The white connotes purity, glamour and crispness. The black is a classic colour associated with fashion because of it’s style and class. The colour of the image and font are similar because it helps to make the page flow and fit together without making things look out of place.

Main Image

The main image on the magazine is a mid-shot of Kiera Knightley. Kiera Knightley is involved in an article inside the magazine so it’s double promotion for her and promotion for the magazine because Kiera Knightley is a big named star who is ‘walking promotion’. The amount of ‘airbrushing’ or photo manipulation which has produced this image is over looked by the audience because of the expectation that has been produced through-out women lifestyle magazines. It also makes women aspire and idolize her image.

Kiera Knightley is in a sexy provocative pose which stereotypically towards her and her acting roles is out of character. Averagely, she performs in innocent and romantic roles compared to the way she is depicted. She is a woman who every woman wants to be and who every man wants to be with, this can be said for a majority of Vogue front covers

Language

The language is written from the point of view of a woman’s best friend which makes this text both informative and entertaining. There is no punctuation on the front cover of the magazine because it connotes informality and it would clutter the front page. There are not many words on the front cover. There are only 31 words on the front cover compared to a lower market and more cluttered front cover of a magazine.

There are 6 plugs used and 5 teasers. There is one plug with no teaser beneath. The plugs are bold and pink to carry on the pink theme and to make them stand out. The teasers are in a thinner, smaller white font to be secondary to the plug. The main story is at the bottom of the page, you can tell it is the main headline because it is in a larger font. The headline is at the bottom of the page. The headline is normally in the center or middle position and above but the headline is at the bottom because it’s a image dominated page.

I haven't been able to find the profit figures or any figures concerning Vogue. I managed to find out that Condé Nast Publications are the publishers of Vogue.

  1. Very thorough! What is the mode of address? Friendly? Didactic? Is it a magazine you would read?

  2. the mode of address is sexy because of her provocative pose and facial expression but also quite blank which would indicate that kiera knightley is being used as something to look at which de-humanises her much like the laura mulvey theory of the male gase and viewing someone as an object. i personally wouldn't read vogue being i am uninterested in celebrity lifestyle and i find vogue quite an expensive magazine to buy. as i think this way, i shall be making my music magazine affordable i can't apply this to the preliminary task because the college magazine would be free.
