front page annalysis of rock magazines (Rocksound)

there isn't alot of stories on the front cover instead there are just 2 lists of the bands featured inside the mag zine. there are 3 stories (puffs and teasers) inside the strap line which is an unconventional place to position them. i think they should be positioned in a more noticeable, conventional place and they shouldn't be as small as they are. inside the strap line also lies the image previews of the posters inside the magazine.
the headline states 'we predict a riot' which employs intertextuality are from a well known song from the Kaiser Chiefs. the headline is visible and visually effective in displaying the stereotypically destructive rock lifestyle but the headline has no relevance and has no puff to explain the significance. the photo spanning the front cover is the only hint that it involves the headline. this could be a clever ploy to make the purchaser read the magazine or lack of judgement to not explain the headline.
the cost of this magazine can be seen by the front cover because of the glossy thick card that the front cover is printed on is of a much higher caliber than Kerrang, which would explain the price difference. Kerrang (weekly) being £2.20 and Rocksound (monthly) being £3.80 and my third magazine of Terrorizer (monthly) magazine being £3.80.
the font on the front is noticeable and a nice noticeable colour and graphic. the three main colours of the magazine are purple black and white. black and white are quite basic yet complimentary colours and purple is quite a mysterious which could explain the headline on the front as it is unexplained.
the yellow used on the front cover is to highlight specific words or phrases as yellow connotes danger (which would also link with the riot side of the headline) and makes things eye catching which it creates very well on this front cover.
the large rip on the front of the magazine is the reminisce of a supplementary CD attached to the front cover which came free with the magazine. i think this is something i may think about doing with my magazine because 'freebies' help sell magazines.
the mode of address of the image is angry which with support the connotations of a rock music magazine. the angry facial expressions and the threatening implements they are holding anchor the riot theme of the front cover.

Rocksound covers the more 'underground' scene of music unlike the more commercialised music covered by the likes of Kerrang. Rocksound is a British magazine and label themselves as a leading alternative magazine in the UK. The first edition was published in March 1999. Every issue comes with a Cd which my explian the more expensive price, this would also make it more desirable to buy. the auidence is seen as 15-24 with 58% of the readers being female and 42% being male. 57% of the audience are 15-17 years old and 31% being 18-25 with the other percentage being made up by the 26+ age range.

  1. Again, this is a very thorough and insightful analysis. You are gaining an in depth knowledge now of how these front covers work to advertise themselves to the readers.

I wonder if the free CD attracts buyers? I guess it must do or why have it. This is something you might want to think about for your own product.
