the background looks distressed and worn which ages the paper. there are two pictures one takes up 1/3rd of the page and the other is a preview of the front cover. i think this front cover preview is peculiar as you would of had to see the front cover to open it to the contents page, so to have a preview of the front cover defeats the point of it being there. the large picture is showing people having fun at the heavy metal festival 'Bloodstock' the mode of address is fun and having a good time which isn't a sterotypical picture to see in a heavy metal magazine. they are normally serious are angry in some way. though this goes against conventions i like the fact there can still be light hearted pictures in a genre spesificlly angry magazine. the editorial passage does the same as the kerrangs editorial piece, it brings the reader closer to the magazine. i think their is far to much writing on this page as it swamps the page and doesn't make the contents very attractive to read which could implicate the reading of the magazine. too much and too small a font size. the staff part on the left hand side of the magazine are stereotypically hidden away on the back page.

contents annalysis (Kerrang)

their are multiple images which are mainly page previews of the content inside the magazine. the title is quite noticeable as it is a very visible colour against a contrasting background. yellow signifies danger and warning which are words associated with rock and metal music. there is a small passage from the editor which makes the relationship between the creation of the magazine much more personal. the main three colours of the contents page are yellow, white and black. White and black are used quite often in music magazines. i think this is because they compliment each other without giving out any unwanted connotations.
the enlarged titles which separate some page descriptions makes those certain articles stand out and makes you want to read them. these titles also push the freebies in the magazine such as the posters. there are also small graphics saying cover story which looks a bit like something you would find in a woman's lifestyle magazine and cheapens it slightly but makes it eye catching. i don't know weather i would put this on my magazine but i will see if its something which would work with my style. there is also a plug for weekly subscription in the bottom right hand corner which would create more profit for the magazine. i think it looks quite busy but isn't. the conflicting colours confuse this eye and with a 50/50 split to the page gives your eye alot to look at. i would like my contents to be a mixture between Rocksounds contents page and this contents page.

contents annalysis (Rocksound)

the contents page is one large image covering the whole page. from other contents pages i have seen, this is out of the ordinary.
the contents page theme is a theme carried on from the contents page, this helps the magazine flow but also doesn't give much of a more in depth insight to the content of the magazine. the mode of address of the photograph is hostile and aggressive which are the main theme of rock and metal. the main title isn't very noticeable and i think their should be more page descriptions as it seems very lazy. i like the simple change of colour between the page number and the page descriptions. their is a small Rocksound logo at the bottom of the page, though i feel like this looks out of place and just as something else to put onto the contents page to use up space. although it does anchor the contents page.

double page annalysis (kerrang)

this is a gig review with little writing is almost overpowered by the photograph of Keith Flint from the prodigy. the photograph is of a very high standard, this is to be expected from kerrang as it is the most popular music magazine in the uk so they can afford to hire better photographers and print their photographs with better detail. i like the rip which separates the photograph from the text, its less definate than a line which helps the double page spread flow together. the views from the people attending the gig give it a more personal feel towards to readers to get a different point of view from what the journalist said. the K's shown in red are a rating system of how good the gig was, from 1K which is bad to 5K's which is good. this adds another insight into the gig that the majourity of readers wouldn't of attended. the title doesnt really stand out its too blank and colourless.

annalysis of double page (Terrorizer)

This is a feature article on a band called 'job for a cowboy'. their photograph has been taken by a prison type run down building which shows connotations of the genre they fall into. i think the photo could be of better quality because its been staurated too much which washes out colour and sometimes the detail, which in this case it think it has done. the dusty, run down and desolate building shows neglect and distress which are loose descriptions of the heavy metal genre.
the overall look of the article is cracked and distressed with hints of red which connote blood and anger(once again sterotypically things associated with the heavy metal genre). the text on the article is layed out in coloumns onto paper which looks old and damaged. the main title looks like blood or damage surrounding it showing connotations of the heavy metal genre. everything about this article is connected though colours or graphics in the graphology to connect back to the genre of heavy metal. there are two pull quotes, one at the top and one at the bottom. these give you an insight to the article with just a glance.

Annalysis of double page spread (Rocksound)

this is a double paged interview in Rocksound. this is a interview with questions composed from the fan's of Rocksound themselves. the main colours are black, blue and white. black features heavily in these rock magazines because it signifies power, darkness and mystery. the text is arranged into columns for easy reading and easy graphology. the text also doesn't distract from the image which doesn't make them juxtaposed to each other.

there is a distressed border which helps to format everything and makes it more professional. the language is colloquial as it is a transcripted type article with a question and answer basis. there is one large double page image with another image int the foreground of the 2ND page. the image shows the band in a different light then a normal band shoot, this may reflect the interview because you find out more about them. its a feeling of companionship through reading the interview. they also use racketed action to make the reader feel like they are involved and like they are there.
